Hinds County supervisors consider 1% millage increase

HINDS COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – The Hinds County Board of Supervisors said they’re in the final stages of deliberation on next year’s budget, and a proposal for a 1% millage increase is under consideration.

If approved, the increase is projected to cost the average household approximately $2.00 more per month for a $250,000 home and about $3.00 more per month for a $350,000 home.

According to supervisors, the funds would be used for capital improvements on public projects and support debt services for the new Hinds County Criminal Justice Facility.

The Board must adopt a budget by September 15, 2025. If approved, the budget would take effect on October 1, 2025.

Board President Robert Graham, District 1, said the proposed increase is necessary due to unfunded mandates from the state, tariff impacts and the general rise in the cost of materials and equipment.

“Every effort has been made to avoid a tax increase. However, given the new detention center project authorized by the previous Board, the current condition of the facility, and the ongoing costs associated with maintaining capacity and compliance, a targeted millage increase is necessary to preserve county services at their current level and address critical infrastructure needs,” Graham said.

The Board will continue budget discussions in the coming weeks. A final budget proposal will be presented for public consideration before the September 15 deadline.
