The program awarded Garrett Nussmeier with the No. 18 Jersey. The player who has earned the jersey has been one who embodies what it means to be a Tiger: leadership, selflessness and high character are the key attributes for the players who’ve earned the honor.
Nussmeier has become the first quarterback to wear 18, since the tradition’s founding father Matt Mauck donned the jersey, during LSU’s 2003 national championship run.
As the Tigers’ starting quarterback, Mauck led LSU to an 18-2, and his .900 winning percentage has remained the highest winning percentage for a QB in program history.
Mauck finished his LSU career with 3,831 passing yards, 37 passing touchdowns, 345 rushing yards with five rushing touchdowns and 18 interceptions.
While Nussmeier will try to follow in Mauck’s championship footsteps, the Lake Charles native’s lone starting season rivals his predecessor’s career numbers.
Nussmeier threw 4,052 passing yards for 29 touchdowns and 12 interceptions last season.
The senior will display his new threads in LSU’s season opener at Clemson on August 30th.
Kickoff will be 6:30 p.m. central time on WGNO with a one-hour postgame show following the Battle of the Tigers.
