Austin recovery coach puts spotlight on mental health

AUSTIN (KXAN) — An Austin recovery coach is taking a different approach to tackling mental health struggles.

Davis Collins founded Amethyst Coaching Collaborative, which mixes both physical workouts with therapy sessions to help people who are struggling with their mental health.

“There are people that need something different, there are people right now that are waking up and praying for help,” said Collins.

Collins says his own personal experience dealing with addiction and a near death experience pushed him to explore ways to help others.

“I woke up upside down on Enfield Road in Austin, Texas and my truck had split a telephone pole in half,” said Collins.

Running and working out became a way to cope mentally, but he needed more he says.

“Therapy,” said Collins. “Connecting with your emotional body, starting to learn the tools that will keep you from abusing, and more so important, the why. The why is really the question everyone should ask.”

The primary goal of Amethyst is to create holistic balance in an unbalanced life and teaching others about connection to all aspects of their self says Collins.

He says it’s a one stop shop for physical, emotional, spiritual and mental health, catered to people struggling with addiction or mental health.

Collins has brought together 10 therapists to help in his endeavor.

“Your mental health matters just as much as your physical health and yes, there is help out there for everyone,” said Ilicia Balaban, who is a therapist.

Balaban is the owner of Snowflakes Counseling, PLLC, she says when Collins reached out she was ready to help, especially when his approach combined the physical and mental approach.

“I think it has been a really popular combination in higher levels of care for a long time, but then people come out of those treatment centers and they are back in their community and it can be really hard to maintain the same skill set, the same copes we were using,” said Balaban.

Balaban says having a support system is key.

“Life is hard and life is getting harder for a lot of people,” said Balaban.

Collins says he hopes to continue to expand and offer more services to people who are looking for help.
