I don’t know about you, fellow Bargain Hunter, but the smell of a fresh sale does funny things to my willpower. My carts are crammed again, and the math isn’t making sense against my bank account. Why? Because there’s some real magic tucked in today’s haul. I do apologise for being the voice of temptation. But this is how it’s gonna be all week with me. Fairly warned, be thee, says I.

In retro news, I’m letting a Shambler’s lightning spark this 29-candle Quake cake I baked. It was, of course, id Software’s grim and gothic first-person shooter that forever changed how we thought about online fragging.
Back in 1996, when very few Aussies were dialling directly to one another on screeching 28.8 modems, Quake’s fully 3D world and terrifying monster roster truly felt like “slipgating” into the future of gaming. Its murky castles, fiendish traps, and relentless pacing carved a permanent place in my heart and phone bill. I’d done the same with Doom II, but, for many, it was their first taste of online deathmatch or a LAN party that stretched long into the night. Quake wasn’t just a game; it was a proving ground, one that still echoes in the DNA of shooters today.
Aussie birthdays for notable games.

On Nintendo Switch, Super Mario Odyssey remains one of the finest 3D platformers ever built. I still laugh when I think about Mario suddenly sprouting a moustache on a T-Rex thanks to Cappy’s strange powers. Meanwhile, Pokémon Legends: Arceus reinvented the formula by blending free-roam monster catching with a feudal twist that finally made me feel like a true surveyor of the wilds.

Over on Xbox Series X, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is showing off an uncharacteristically daring campaign this time around, and I’ll admit it has me curious about where the conspiracy web unravels. On the quieter end, Subnautica: Below Zero’s mix of claustrophobic survival and icy alien oceans made me fear fish in ways I didn’t think possible.

The PS5 is shining with Hitman World of Assassination, a living clockwork of assassination opportunities where even a humble blueberry muffin can be a weapon of mass distraction. Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed is also a lovely comeback story, resurrecting Warren Spector’s underappreciated paintbrush experiment with a colourful coat that makes its Disney vault references pop.

PC players shouldn’t miss Assassin’s Creed Mirage, a confident return to smaller, stealth-driven roots that reminded me why I fell for the series back in the Ezio years. Lastly, Stray gave me the oddest sense of empathy I’ve felt in gaming, padding silently through neon alleyways as a cat brushing up against broken robots and forgotten stories.
