TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Topeka Zoo is mourning the loss of one of its animals.

According to a Facebook post from the zoo, Liz the giraffe passed away Saturday night at approximately 10:00 p.m. Named after Elizabeth Stratton, a Topeka Philanthropist, Liz was born on August 21, 2018, at the Topeka Zoo and Conservation Center. Her birth captured the attention of over 1,300 viewers on a live YouTube video.

It is unknown at this time what caused Liz’s death. The zoo is currently gathering more information as it waits for pending test results. In the meantime, the Giraffe & Friends building will be closed to the public for the remainder of the day.

If you would like to drop off a card for the zoo staff, you can do so by bringing it to the zoo’s gift shop.
