The Harlan County Sheriff’s Office posted a news release on social media Sunday, where deputies said 51-year-old Stacy Huff was allegedly highly intoxicated at a residence in the Closplint community, holding family members at knifepoint. At some point, he allegedly took out a gun and started “making threats.”
A deputy, accompanied by officers with the Evarts Police Department, reportedly found Huff’s family members walking across the bridge near the residence.
When law enforcement officials introduced themselves to Huff, he allegedly shot at them, but didn’t injure anyone.
Deputies wrote that negotiations with Huff ended around 12:30 a.m. on Aug. 24, when he surrendered to the sheriff’s office and one of his sons. He was then taken into custody.
Huff was charged with two counts of attempted murder of a peace officer and fourth-degree assault—domestic violence. He was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $1 million cash bond.
The shooting investigation remains ongoing.
