Damaged pipe sends wastewater into Lake Norman
Around 87 gallons of wastewater made it into Lake Norman after a damaged low-pressure pipe caused an overflow near 18603 Harborside Drive.
According to Charlotte Water, most lakeside homes use low-pressure sewer systems, which pump waste to gravity-fed sewer lines leading to treatment plants.
When these pipes break or clog, officials said spills like this can happen.
“A majority of wastewater overflows can be prevented with your help,” Cam Coley, spokesperson at Charlotte Water, said in a released statement. “Anything put in plumbing or a manhole can cause wastewater overflows, spilling raw sewage into your street, your creek or even inside your own home. Even products labeled as ‘flushable’ do not break down in the sewer system and can contribute to clogging.”
