Deputies responded to reports of a scheme on Thursday around 5:45 p.m. The victim stated that she attempted to call a mechanic service that she saw online after her car broke down on Chatham Heights Road; however, help never arrived.
The victim claimed the person behind the scheme asked her to transfer money via Apple Pay to pay for the car part and reassured her that help would be on the way to repair her vehicle.
Deputies say the victim called the company directly, to which she learned that the business does not perform mobile mechanic services and that this incident has happened to other people in the past.
Deputies emphasize that schemes can be hard to spot and advise the public to contact a company directly before paying upfront for their services.
