Ryan Michael Bate, the man accused of shooting and killing two Tremonton police officers, appears in court

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Less than one week after two Tremonton police officers were shot and killed, the suspected killer appeared in court.

Ryan Michael Bate, 32, appeared virtually in court from the Weber County Jail for an initial appearance on Friday, Aug. 22. He faces a long list of charges including aggravated murder, attempted murder, conduct to injure or kill a police canine, unlawful detention, assault, and domestic violence.

Among the 20 total charges, Bate faces 10 felonies, including two capital charges. The Box Elder County Attorney’s Office has filed a notice of intent to seek the death penalty. Bate appeared to be in tears as Judge Spencer D. Walsh of the First District Court read off each of his charges during Friday’s appearance.

Bate was appointed two attorneys from the Utah Indigent Defense Commission to represent him. Judge Walsh also signed a pre-trial protective order for four alleged victims of a previous domestic violence case against Bate that was dismissed over a year ago.

During Friday’s initial appearance, Bate’s decision to preliminary hearing was scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 30, 2025, at 9 a.m.

On August 17, 2025, Bate allegedly shot and killed Sergeant Lee Sorensen and Officer Eric Estrada during a domestic disturbance at his home in Tremonton. He also allegedly shot and injured Deputy Mike Allred and K9 Officer Azula, attacked his wife, and shot at a neighbor.

Additionally, the prosecutor has refiled several domestic violence charges against Bate, which were dismissed without prejudice in 2024. The charges include aggravated assault, multiple counts of domestic violence in the presence of a child, and property damage.

Funeral services for Officer Estrada will take place on Thursday, Aug. 28 at 10 a.m. Sgt. Sorensen’s service will happen the following day at 10 a.m.

Deputy Allred and K-9 Azula have both returned home and are recovering.
