The FDA released a new recall on Thursday, saying California-based Southwind Foods, sold under the brands Sand Bar, Arctic Shores, Best Yet, Great American and First Street, frozen shrimp could also have been affected by radioactive contamination.
Radionuclide, Cesium-137, is a man-made radioisotope of cesium, the FDA said. The primary health effect of concern following longer-term, repeated low-dose exposure (e.g., through consumption of contaminated food or water over time) is an elevated risk of cancer, resulting from damage to DNA within living cells of the body.
The FDA said the bagged, frozen shrimp product was distributed between July 17 and August 8 to retailers, distributors and wholesalers in the following states:

The FDA is actively investigating reports of Cesium-137 contamination in shipping containers and frozen shrimp products processed by PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati (doing business as BMS Foods) of Indonesia. No illnesses have been reported to date, the FDA said.
Below is a gallery of the frozen shrimp listed in this additional recall:
Consumers who have purchased the recalled frozen shrimp should not consume the product and should dispose of the product or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-323-262-8222 Monday-Friday during normal business hours (8am-4pm Pacific Time).
This set of recalled frozen shrimp comes after the U.S. FDA asked Walmart to pull three lots of Great Value brand frozen shrimp from stores after federal officials detected Cesium-137, a radioactive isotope, in shipping containers and a sample of breaded shrimp imported from Indonesia on August 20.
This initial notice affected 13 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia.
This additional recall notice adds seven additional states, bringing the total number of states with the recall to 20.
The FDA also added PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati to a new import alert on August 14 for chemical contamination to stop products from this firm from coming into the U.S. until the firm has resolved the conditions that gave rise to the appearance of the violation.
