Prolonged monsoon push brings T-storms and flash flood potential
SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4) – Happy Friday, Utah! We are finally getting a solid push of monsoon moisture – better late than never! Isolated thunderstorms are on deck for today, especially for central and southern Utah, but northern Utah will get some as well.

We’ll see a mix of sun and clouds with thunderstorms developing in the afternoon and evening with the heat of the day. Most storms will be high-based, meaning mountain terrain will have a better chance of seeing precipitation. Isolated rain showers are still expected in valleys, but some thunderstorms will be dry, bringing gusty winds and dry lightning. Temperatures will remain warm with daytime highs in the mid to upper 90s for valleys, and mid 100s for warmer spots. Lower Washington County is under an Extreme Heat Warning is in effect until 9 pm, including St. George and Zion National Park, where highs will be getting uncomfortably close the 110 range.

The flash flood risk is listed as “possible” for all of Southern Utah’s parks, so anyone with outdoor recreation plans in Southern Utah should stay weather aware with the threat of slot canyons, normally dry washes and slick rock facing the possibility of flooding. Flash flooding will be possible through the weekend and likely into next week.

This monsoon push will bring a prolonged period of thunderstorms and rain showers for the next week. On Saturday we will see thunderstorms becoming more scattered in nature for the south while northern Utah still just has a few isolated storms. The moisture continues pushing north though, so scattered thunderstorms and rain showers are expected for the entire state by Sunday. Temperatures also start to drop this weekend. St. George will fall into the low 100s for Saturday and Sunday, the Wasatch Front stays in the upper 90s on Saturday, but will cool down into the upper 80s and low 90s by Sunday.

Scattered thunderstorms stay in the forecast for the next week, and temperatures will continue cooling off. The Wasatch Front will cool down into the upper 80s to kick off the workweek, eventually dropping into the low 80s by the back half of the workweek. St. George will return to 90s on Monday and bottom out in the low 90s by Wednesday.
