PREP FOOTBALL: Cold Springs hammers Hanceville in season opener 65-7

BREMEN, Ala. – Cold Springs hosted a county battle with the Hanceville Bulldogs at Cranford Stricklin Stadium Thursday night, and the Eagles kicked off the season in dominant fashion, hammering Hanceville 65-7. Cold Springs built a 43-0 lead in the second quarter before the Bulldogs found the end zone just before halftime to make it a 43-7 game at the break. The Eagles tacked on three more scores in the second half to pull away and win their season opener comfortably. Cold Springs quarterback Ayden Black kicked off the year with a huge performance, throwing three touchdowns through the air, running for another on the ground and returning a punt for a score as well.

Cold Springs took control early, scoring on its opening possession when Black connected with Breydon Hallmon for a 19-yard touchdown and an 8-0 lead. Black hit Eli Voce over the middle for a 12-yard touchdown on the next possession to make it 16-0 going into the second quarter. An 8-yard touchdown run from Cooper Johnson stretched the lead to 24-0 early in the second and Black’s third touchdown pass of the night, this time to Ethan Day gave Cold Springs a 30-0 lead with six minutes remaining in the first half.

Black returned the next Hanceville punt 42 yards for a touchdown to make it a 37-0 game and with just over two minutes to play in the second quarter, Tycen Kilgo punched one in from 7 yards out to give the Eagles a commanding, 43-0 lead. Hanceville was able to get on the board in the final seconds of the first half when quarterback Hunter Black hit AJ Carnathan downfield for a 25-yard touchdown, trimming the lead to 43-7 at the break.

Cold Springs continued to add to its lead in the third quarter. After another big run from Cason Alexander, Black scored on a 50-yard run to put the Eagles ahead 51-7 early in the third. On the next Cold Springs possession, a big gain on the ground from Tidus Light put the Eagles in scoring position and Alexander ran it in from 35 yards out on the next play to make it a 58-7 game.

The final score of the night came in the opening minute of the fourth quarter when Jordan Garmon punched one into the end zone from 2 yards out, putting the finishing touches on a dominant, 65-7 victory for the Eagles.

Hallmon led Cold Springs’ receivers with 54 yards and a touchdown on three receptions. Alexander led the way on the ground with 183 yards and a touchdown. Black and Kilgo added 70 and 58 rushing yards, respectively.

Cold Springs (1-0) will try to build off this fast start when they host Curry next week and Hanceville (0-1) will look to bounce back at home against Holly Pond.
