CHARLOTTE (CAROLINA SPORTS LIVE) — In a game void of starters, the Panthers fell to the Steelers Thursday night in their final preseason game, 19-10.

Carolina finished the preseason winless in three games.

The Panthers’ running game got the emphasis offensively, with 171 yards on 35 carries. Raheem Blackshear led the way with 35 yards on 11 carries, while rookie Trevor Etienne broke a 28-yarder for one of his three carries.

The Panthers found the end zone in the second quarter when quarterback Jack Plummer connected with James Mitchell for a short touchdown pass. It capped off a 12-play, 78-yard drive just before halftime.

Plummer and starter Bryce Perkins combined for just 84 passing yards on 25 attempts. Fourteen different players caught passes; Hunter Renfrow was one of five players with two catches.

The visiting Steelers saw a big game from QB Skyler Thompson. He connected on 11 of 13 passes for 152 yards and a score.

The 19 points were the fewest Carolina allowed all preseason. Cornerback Lathan Ransom picked off Rock Hill native Mason Rudolph in the first quarter, and the Panthers recorded just one tackle for loss.

NFL teams have until Aug. 26 to cut their rosters down to 53.

The Panthers open the regular season Sept. 7 at the Jaguars.
