Nags Head Fishing Pier remains constant through decades of hurricanes

NAGS HEAD, N.C. (WNCN) – On Thursday morning, as Hurricane Erin was more than 200 miles away from North Carolina, the high waves and strong winds were felt and seen all along the coast, including from the Nags Head Fishing Pier.

Andy McCann has owned the Fishing Pier and Restaurant for more than 40 years. He’s seen many hurricanes and storms impact the pier and the Outer Banks during that time.

In his time owning the pier, he’s witnessed a lot of memories made as well, including seeing children learn to enjoy fishing off this iconic pier.

“We raised a lot of kids out here on this pier,” he said.  “I mean, when I came here, there were kids out here, you mentor people that were taking care of them, take them under their wing, show them how to do things, do it right, behave, and do everything. And now they’re grown and got kids of their own!”

As Hurricane Erin moves away from North Carolina and the water finally calms down, more people will be able to enjoy the beauty of the Outer Banks and get back to what makes it so special: enjoying the scenery, the outdoors, and the people.
