The West Nile Virus is spread by mosquitoes, which are more active this year due to heat and precipitation. The KDHE states that cases where the virus travels to the brain are more severe.
However, there are ways to prevent it, such as reducing the number of mosquitoes you are exposed to.
27 News spoke with pest control service Mosquito Joe about how to decrease mosquito exposure. Mosquito Joe specializes in mosquitoes, including researching their behavior and habitats, to better understand and exterminate them.
“Wear long clothing, if that’s practical. Wear light colored clothing because mosquitoes seem to be attracted more to darker colors. If you’re sitting on your patio or your deck, if you can have a fan to keep them off of them, that’ll help,” Mosquito Joe Owner, Terry Fritz said. “Try to keep a clean, well-maintained yard. Don’t give him habitats to lay their eggs in any water sources.”
People who are infected may experience flu-like symptoms, but the virus can’t be spread through human contact.
