Between July 2023 and July 2024, the region reportedly gained more than 57,000 new residents through migration, according to the U.S. Census. The growth places the Queen City among the fastest-growing areas in the country, fueled by people coming from all over the U.S. and abroad.

“The consistent flow of people moving to our region reinforces what we already know: Charlotte is a destination of choice,” Tracy Dodson, COO and head of economic development at the Charlotte Regional Business Alliance, said in a released statement. “Talent follows opportunity, and the Charlotte Region continues to deliver both.”
That opportunity includes jobs, schools, and a mix of urban and rural living, all set in a milder climate. “The Charlotte Region’s flourishing economy and expanding population are a testament to its multifaceted appeal,” Jenn Bosser, president and CEO of the Iredell Economic Development Corporation, said in a released statement.
Charlotte’s popularity also stands out nationally. City officials said it is outpacing big-name cities like Boston, Nashville, and even Los Angeles in attracting new people. And the interest is global, with 49% of the newcomers reportedly coming from outside the U.S.

Housing demand is rising, too. Officials said the National Association of Realtors recently ranked the Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia area among its Top 10 Housing Hot Spots for 2025. “We are very fortunate; the Carolinas continue to be a preferred destination for in-migration,” Gary Scott, president of Howard Hanna Allen Tate Real Estate, said in a released statement.
As the Charlotte region continues to grow, leaders said it’s now time to invest in infrastructure, especially transportation. A 1% local sales tax increase could generate nearly $20 billion over 30 years, helping meet the needs of a growing population.
