Car crashes into fence in South Bay, possibly sparking multi-acre fire: sheriff

(KRON) — A car crashed into a fence and then struck a large rock Thursday afternoon in unincorporated Santa Clara County, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office. It happened around 12:17 p.m. on W. San Martin Avenue near Sunshine Road where a 14-acre grass fire was ignited.

The impact of the crash may have caused the fire, the sheriff’s office said. It was a solo vehicle crash, and the driver was the only party involved. The driver was not seriously injured.

As of 4 p.m., the fire is fully contained, the sheriff’s office said. Forward progress on the fire stopped at 1:20 p.m., according to the Santa Clara County Fire Department.

No mandatory evacuations were issued.
