Teen pulled from water at north suburban beach dies

EVANSTON, Ill. — A teen boy who was pulled from the water at a north suburban beach overnight has died, officials confirmed Thursday morning.

According to officials, the teen was among a group swimming at Lighthouse Beach in Evanston on Wednesday night.

Officials from the Evanston Fire Department said the teen was swimming with friends in the water around 9 p.m., but when he did not resurface, his friends called 911.

Once on the scene, crews pulled the teen from the water and quickly began CPR before he was taken to the hospital.

Officials did not provide specific details on the teen’s condition, but said he was listed in serious condition.

The medical examiner later confirmed that the teen had died.

Despite the rough waters, rescue teams did put some boats in and got some drones up to help locate the victim.

They eventually found him about 40 yards south of the breakwall near Lighthouse Beach in what officials described as “relatively shallow water.”

While his identity remains unclear, the medical examiner said he was a 17-year-old boy from Skokie.

Over the last several days, Evanston and Chicago have been under a beach warning, and waves reached between three and five feet on Wednesday night.

The beach warning is set to expire on Thursday morning.
