Southwest Side of Chicago hit by worst flooding in over a decade

CHICAGO — Over the last month, the city’s Southwest Side has reportedly experienced the worst flooding events in over a decade.

Residents in several communities have had their basements flooded and homes damaged by recent heavy rain and storms.

“We just need more support when it comes to the flooding,” said Gage Park resident Rosie Villegas, adding that her family has endured two catastrophic flooding events since July 25, which forced her grandparents to evacuate their basement.

City leaders want to ensure residents can access resources.

Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García, along with a host of state legislators, Chicago alders, and county commissioners calling for updated infrastructure.

“I’ve called for this area to be declared a disaster zone. So that the flow can directly flow to the residents who need it. Congress, in partnership with state and local leaders, have been able to secure $426 million for Chicago alone, and $244 million for Cook County, including $96 million for communities like Cicero, for disaster recovery and flood mitigation. These investments are the start, but only matter if families can access them,” said Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García.

This year alone, six communities on the Southwest Side made up 60 percent of all the flooding reports in Chicago.

In the 14th Ward, almost 2,000 families have filed reports since July.

On Monday, six alderpeople sent a letter to Mayor Brandon Johnson. They say a multi-funded backflow valve system is the easiest, most cost-effective way to minimize the damage of future flooding.

During a press conference on Tuesday morning, Mayor Johnson acknowledged that the infrastructure needs improvement. He is now waiting on Governor JB Pritzker for state help.

Officials are asking residents to file 3-1-1 reports, document damages and take pictures, and complete the city’s flood damage assessment survey.

Leaders say every report matters. It helps secure relief and investment.
