Service workers offer help for survivors of domestic violence after Tremonton shooting

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Following the deadly shooting of two police officers who were killed while responding to a domestic disturbance call, neighbors are asking anyone suffering from domestic violence reaches out for help.

“Anyone out there, you know, you should put the hotline out there… let people call especially if they’re having a hard time at home,” Kevin Richard, the suspect’s neighbor said.

Richard added that anyone out there suffering from domestic violence should reach out to the Utah Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-897-5465.

Free and confidential help and support for victims and survivors of domestic and intimate partner violence is available 24/7 at 1-800-897-LINK (5465). If you or someone else is in immediate danger or in an emergency, call 9-1-1 immediately.

“Speak with a trained advocate that can develop a safety plan with them that meets the needs of their unique situation. The Utah domestic violence coalition does have a 24/7 hotline,” Utah Domestic Violence Coalition Communications & Engagement Specialist Kimmi Wolf said.

Police say Ryan Bate shot and killed Sergeant Lee Sorensen and Officer Eric Estrada. Bate is also accused of shooting Deputy Mike Allred and his police K-9 Azula. Both were taken to the hospital and survived.

Bate has a history of domestic violence, according to court documents, and was arrested on May 8, 2024, due to a domestic violence incident.

“There are recent news reports of what’s happening here in Utah, especially Tremonton, and there’s a lot of people that want to act, want to find out what they can do to be a safe space for a loved one or even ensure that there is increased safety in their community,” Wolf said.

The Utah Domestic Violence Coalition, a statewide nonprofit organization who says their mission is to end domestic violence, says it’s offering help. The organization is a statewide nonprofit that specializes in serving victims of domestic violence.

“If you are a victim of domestic violence, we have shelter options, transitional housing, case management, advocacy, legal support. You do not need to enter a shelter to get any of those support systems,” Wolf said.
