SC lawmaker facing child sex charges, trial date postponed

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WSPA) — The federal trial for former South Carolina lawmaker RJ May (R-Lexington) has been postponed, with jury selection now set to begin on October 8th.

May, of West Columbia, faces ten counts of distributing child sex abuse material, was originally scheduled to go on trial in September.

However, a public defender requested a continuance, leading to the delay.

May was a representative for Lexington County before he resigned earlier this month following his arrest.

May wrote that “it is in the best interests of my family and constituents to resign immediately.” His letter of resignation did not mention the 10 charges he faces or the more than a decade in prison that prosecutors have suggested May could face if convicted.
