Freshman finds new home at Hardin-Simmons University after living abroad in Africa

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – When Omar Harris left Dallas for Kenya after his family took a job with the U.S. Embassy, he didn’t expect his track and field career to take off overseas. Now back in Texas, Harris is one of hundreds of new students beginning Stampede Week, Hardin-Simmons University’s orientation program designed to help freshmen adjust before classes begin.

Running August 20 through 23, the week includes group activities led by upperclassmen, move-in assistance, and nightly events designed to help new students build connections.

Harris, a freshman and member of HSU’s track and field team, said his time abroad changed the way he sees the world.

“I really enjoyed my time in Kenya—it gave me a new perspective on life,” Harris shared.

Although he valued the experience, Harris said it feels good to be back in the United States, especially after missing family and the sports culture he grew up loving, including baseball.

He says he’s looking forward to competing on the track team and making new connections on campus.

“I’m excited to be able to throw and compete for Hardin-Simmons, and I’m excited about meeting new people as an incoming freshman, so I think that’s what I’m mostly excited for this year and new experiences,” Harris said.

As Stampede Week continues, students like Harris are finding their place at HSU and starting the year with fresh experiences and new support systems.
