4 coffee truck employees injured in explosion during Wake Forest University move-in day

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) — The Winston-Salem Fire Department is investigating a coffee truck explosion on Wednesday morning.

Police say they got a call about a truck explosion at around 7:28 a.m. in the area of the LJVM Coliseum on 2825 University Parkway.

Investigators are working to determine what happened with the vehicle.

WSPD said in an 8 a.m. news release that they are assisting in “a large vehicle fire” on the 2800 block of University Parkway.

An alert from Wake Forest University said that “several individuals suffered injuries in an explosion in a coffee truck.” None of those injured were students or employees at the school.

Wednesday morning was move-in day at Wake Forest. Most students were checking in at the LJVM Coliseum.

Four people were injured in the explosion, all suffering burns, according to police. All four were taken to the hospital.

WSFD posted a photo of the involved food truck on X. The photo shows the title “Given Coffee Truck.”

A post on Given Coffee’s Facebook page reveals that their food truck was scheduled to be at LJVM Coliseum for WFU’s move-in day.

A WSFD spokesperson confirmed that Given Coffee was at the coliseum for move-in day and that all four of the people injured were employees of the food truck.

Given Coffee Company provided the following statement:

As you may have seen in the news today, our Given Coffee Truck was involved in an accident this morning at LJVM Coliseum in Winston-Salem. This occurred while the truck was being prepared to serve parents and students during move-in day for Wake Forest University. Four of our employees were working in the truck when the accident occurred. Further investigation is being done to determine the cause. While the employees involved are currently alert and in stable condition, they each have sustained injuries that will require further medical attention. We are grateful there were no fatalities and request continued prayers for our staff and their families.
