On Tuesday, the West Virginia DMV shared the following information on Facebook:
Earlier today, a satirical post claimed all licensed West Virginia motorists would be re-tested in 2026. This is not true.
The DMV is NOT requiring motorists to retake their tests.”

The rumor and clarification sparked conversation on whether or not people should have retake their driver’s tests, especially after a certain age. Currently, only very limited drivers are required to take the driving skills test in West Virginia, which includes proving proficiency in various driving maneuvers.
Those include:
- Drivers getting their license for the first time
- Drivers whose license has been expired for more than six months
- Drivers with an out-of-state license that is expired for any length of time
- Out-of-state drivers who are under the age of 18 and do not have a Level 2 GDL intermediate driver’s license equivalent
West Virginia does not have a requirement for people over a certain age to retake their driver’s test, although some states do. According to MB Law Firm, Illinois requires drivers who are 75 or older to take a mandatory road test, and other states change the vision testing and renewal requirements after a certain age.
