CHARLOTTE (PINPOINT WEATHER) — Wednesday starts off slightly cooler after highs hit the mid-80s on Tuesday. We’re warm and comfortable this Wednesday morning with mid- to upper-60s and low-70s locked in to start the morning.

Partly cloudy skies are locked in with light winds and patchy fog, but sunshine will dominate as we head into the afternoon. Winds will settle out of the north-northeast between 3 and 8 miles per hour as highs make a run for the upper 80s during the peak heating hours of the day.

Wednesday afternoon and evening, we can see a few pop-up showers and storms, first in our mountain counties and then tracking south towards the I-40 corridor and potentially into parts of uptown.

Overnight lows will dip into the low 70s with partly cloudy skies sticking around. Highs will rebound into the upper 80s yet again as we head into the second half of the workweek. Rain chances will ramp up heading into the weekend as low 80s settle in heading into the weekend.

Hurricane Erin continues to churn off the Carolina coast and track north-northwest on Wednesday morning as a Category 2 storm. Forecasts still bring the track north and east and off into the northern Atlantic, but not before the periphery of the storm impacts the Outer Banks.

Rip currents are already an issue, but wave heights of up to 15 feet or more could be possible with some isolated downpours and storms impacting the coast. Look for conditions to improve throughout the day on Thursday, but areas along the Outer Banks can see significant beach erosion and sand displacement, as well as flooding and damage to structures along the coast.

This weekend warms back up into the upper 80s with lower rain chances on Sunday. We’ll sit in the mid-80s with partly cloudy skies heading into early next week.
