SOUTH JORDAN, Utah (ABC4) — The South Jordan Police Department has confirmed that there was a lockdown at the Lifetime Fitness gym at 10996 S River Front Parkway, and a suspect is now in custody.
According to the Sgt. Eric Anderson with the South Jordan Police Department, a bomb threat was called in at the gym. The manager was told that someone was in the parking lot with multiple firearms and a bomb planted in their vehicle.
Shaun Becker with South Jordan Police said that officers quickly responded to the scene. The call included a description of the vehicle, but they were not able to find it. However, the suspect also identified himself on the call, and Becker confirmed that he was taken into custody.
Becker also said that police were able to safely evacuate the gym. The South Jordan Police Department had bomb-sniffing dogs on scene and is continuing to investigate the threat.
They believe this may be a swatting, a type of false call, but according to Becker, the bomb-sniffing dogs did positively indicate for explosives, and so they are continuing to investigate the incident as a viable threat.
There is no threat to the public at this time, Becker said.
The public no longer needs to avoid the area, but Becker said that the gym will be closed for the foreseeable future. She requested that the public avoid the gym to allow investigators to continue their investigation.
Officials also said that the school across the street from the gym, Dancing Moose Montessori, made the decision to evacuate their students. Other schools in the area were placed on lockdown, but the lockdowns have now been lifted.
In addition to the South Jordan Police Department, other agencies responded, including Unified Police and Unified Fire Authority.
There is no further information at this time, but police said that they will update the public as more information becomes available.
