SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — The Salt Lake Plaza Hotel in downtown Salt Lake City will be closed and later demolished, with its space being used as a temple parking lot.

Property Reserve, a subsidiary of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints announced that it will be closing the Salt

Lake Plaza Hotel on November 1, 2025. After its closure, the property will be fully transferred to the Church and demolition will begin.

According to official statements, the hotel’s demolition is planned, “due to rising costs to maintain, operate, and update its aging structure.”

Throughout demolition, both the actual hotel and the attached parking garage will be removed floor-by-floor. This process reportedly allows recyclable materials to be handled sustainably.

When the hotel is fully demolished, it will be used as a parking area for the Church’s Salt Lake City Temple open house, which is expected to take place in April 2027. However, Church officials say there are no long-term plans for the site following the open house yet.

Reportedly, Property Reserve will support hotel employees and provide financial and job-search assistance to them prior to the hotel’s closure.

Plaza Hotel is near several key downtown locations, including Temple Square, City Creek Center, and the Salt Palace Convention Center. Following its demolition, Salt Lake City will still have 28 other hotels and a total of 7,241 rooms within one mile of downtown.
