We will see isolated showers and storms develop across the mountains and foothills Wednesday afternoon. A rogue cell or two may make a run towards Charlotte, but most of the metro will be dry. Tracking a mix of sun and clouds for Thursday, with more isolated storm chances.
Thursday’s storms will have a better chance of making it to Charlotte. Can’t rule out a storm or two for the Panthers’ Preseason game Thursday night.
Heading into the weekend, we will see a higher chance for scattered showers and storms. Not tracking any washouts, but there will be more storms around.
Hurricane Erin became massive in size on Wednesday. It is way bigger in size than it was on Tuesday. The storm is roughly 600 miles wide.
That is how many miles it takes to drive from Charlotte to New York. This means the wind field will be spread out further from the center of the storm.
Although it is bigger, the storm is still a Category 2 storm, with 110 mph sustained winds as of the 11 a.m. advisory. It is slightly stronger than Tuesday.
The impacts for the East Coast remain the same. The biggest impacts of storm surge, tropical storm force winds, coastal flooding, and beach erosion will arrive tonight and early Thursday for eastern North Carolina and eastern Virginia. The Outer Banks will take the brunt of the action from Erin. The storm is still not going to make landfall and will remain offshore.
There are two other tropical waves east of Hurricane Erin, but neither is expected to be a threat to the U.S. at this time.
The tropics will stay hot like this through at least September and early October.
