Faith Heaton Jolley, the Public Information Officer, shared that in recent decades, Utah has experienced fluctuations in its deer population.
“The 2024 post-hunting season population estimate was approximately 295,200 deer — 73% of the long-term management objective of 404,900 deer,” stated Jolley.
Consequently, the DWR has put extra effort into habitat restoration and projects to benefit deer. Jolley said that they have put $30 million into 115 dee-related habitat projects.
The projects, administered through Utah’s Watershed Restoration Initiative, improve the quality of life for deer. Jolley shared that some projects involve removing overcrowded trees, eliminating invasive grasses, reseeding areas, and installing wildlife fencing.
Online mule deer dashboard
Additionally, there is a new online mule deer dashboard. The dashboard contains information on deer population and the various research happening in Utah.
“This new resource is a one-stop shop for information about Utah’s mule deer,” DWR Big Game Coordinator Dax Mangus shared. “Hunters and others can find valuable deer-specific information including migration research, harvest success, population estimates by hunting unit, habitat projects, predator management, unit management plans, videos and podcasts about deer management and other relevant facts about deer. We hope this easy-to-use webpage is a helpful resource for those who are passionate about deer.”
