Don Davis, a Democrat from Eastern North Carolina, is re-upping his affiliation with a group that pushes centrist policies over partisan politics, called the Forward Party.
North Carolina is a purple state, and its congressional districts are drawn in a way that usually leads to single-party dominance in each district, but East Carolina Professor Brad Lockerbie said that can’t be said for the Davis’ district, NC-01.
“He lives in a district or represents a district that is going to be competitive in a two-party context,” said Lockerbie.
It is a seat that democrats want to keep and republicans want to steal, as the GOP holds a slim majority in the US House.
“The democrats probably need to hold on to the Don Davis seat to have much of a chance at a majority. I think whoever gets the majority in the House, it’s going to be a very narrow majority,” added Lockerbie.
Radio station WUNC reported that last week, Davis re-upped his affiliation with the Forward Party, which is described as an organization that is not left and not right, opposed to polarization.
A spokesperson for Davis’ re-election campaign made clear the congressman is a democrat and has no plans to switch parties, but that he supports the Forward Party’s mission.
“My party affiliation will remain unchanged, but my focus is crystal clear: prioritizing the well-being of the individuals I serve and ensuring their voices are always at the forefront,” Davis said via a statement.
While Davis was able to win re-election in 2024 after affiliating with the group, there is no guarantee he will see that same result in 2026.
“It’s going to be difficult no matter what he does; he’s hoping to thread that needle between the Democrats and the Republicans, but I think it’s going to be difficult,” said Lockerbie.
