Teenager arrested, accused in shooting death of St. James Parish teen

ST. JAMES PARISH, La. (WGNO) — A St. James Parish teenager is in police custody accused in the death of another teenager on Aug. 6.

According to the St. James Parish Sheriff’s Office, at 8:40 p.m. on Aug. 6, deputies responded a shooting in the Paulina area in the 3000 block of Highway 642.

Responding deputies arrived to find 16-year-old Jaylen Smith shot multiple times, He was taken to a hospital where he later died.

Through an investigation, deputies identified another 16-year-old boy as the suspect. An arrest warrant was issued and at 11:11 p.m. on Aug. 18, the suspect was arrested and booked on a charge of first-degree murder.

Deputies say the investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information in the incident can call the sheriff’s office at 225-562-2200 or 911.
