27 News talked to Becky Frank, owner of the Sommerset Café in Dover, this week about her future plans for the business. She said it is currently for sale at $55,000 which includes the restaurant’s inventory of tables, chairs, refrigerators and more. The building the café is inside is not included in the sale.
Frank said that, while the business is for sale, it won’t be closing anytime soon. People will still be able to visit the café and grab some of their favorite dishes made there while the sale moves forward.
“I think its an old tradition and a destination,” Frank said. “I know whoever will take up the torch after me will do well.”
Dover’s Sommerset Café has gone through a lot of changes over the last several decades. Frank, a native of Eskridge, remembers visiting the place in her childhood and seeing it slowly transform into the restaurant that it is today.
Frank, who has run the place for the last two-and-a-half years, said that recent life changes are forcing her to step back from owning the café. She said that she’ll still be working hard to create the homemade delicacies locals enjoy before passing the restaurant on to someone else.
“For health reasons, I’m stepping out,” Frank said. “I won’t be here during business hours. I’ll still be behind the scenes doing the baking. There will be some changes but the food will still be good quality and fresh.”
Frank said she regularly gets up before dawn and starts baking to give customers some “mom and pop” style food, often sticking around till past 10 p.m. to make sure the café runs smoothly. She said she makes biscuits, cinnamon rolls, pies and more from scratch.
“We try to do as much as we can homemade,” Frank said.
Sommerset Café is currently open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday. Frank said that, starting on Sept. 2, the business hours will change to 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday to Friday.
“Well, it’s hard for me to let it go,” Frank said. “I’ve been in food service since I was 11. It’s what I know and it’s what I love to do. I had a 10-year plan when I got this place but life threw me a curve ball.”
You can find the Sommerset Café at 5701 Southwest Douglas Road in Dover. For more information, or to inquire about the sale, you can check it out on Facebook or by calling 785-256-6223.
