Advocates and opponents again addressed the commission for the work-session over the proposal to build a $10-million Pickleball Park in southeast Shreveport by the YMCA.
The proposal has bi-partisan support on the commission, but commissioners said not enough people in the parish know the facts. Commissioner Gregory Young of District 2 said he is in favor of the proposal however made a motion to push it back to the Economic Development Committee which passed unanimously.
He said commissioners and the parish need to gain more support and understanding before passing the matter.
He volunteered to conduct a “parish roadshow” to inform and attract residents about the pickleball proposal which his fellow commissioners said they will join. “To me that is a strong indication that people really don’t know what’s going on. That people actually believe that we’re taking tax payer’s money and building a $10-million pickleball court and that’s just not accurate. Quite to the contrary, the individuals that are going to be responsible will be the people who actually use the pickleball court. It’s a project designed to pay for itself,” Young said.
The parish administrator made a point that this is just the proposal phase.
The layout of officially funding the court through revenue bonds would require separate meetings and each measure would have to be approved by the commission first.
