A new program has been approved to get rid of an increasing geese population, wreaking havoc for residents. For decades, Foster City parks have been home to another less friendly neighbor: Canada geese.
Many residents at the problem spot, Leo J. Ryan Park, say they’ve had enough.
“They create such a mess, they are rude, they attack you without any sort of provocation and then you’re trying to bob and weave poop and people,” said Foster City resident Luke Hendriksen.
“I remember being able to swim in the lagoon with no problem or a few beaches that were clean and nice, but now it’s pretty unhabitable,” said Foster City resident Frederick Forsman.
According to city data, upwards of 400 pounds of goose feces a day have been found at Foster City parks — turning a place of fun and relaxation into an obstacle course. But Foster City Parks and Recreation Director Derek Schweigart says no more!
A recently approved plan by the city council has allocated more than $400,000 of the budget to hire a private contractor to help the parks and rec division clean up. That includes removing their food source and hazing strategies.
“Using remote devices, use of dogs, chemicals, treatments to food sources, to the grass and so forth. Essentially just makes the place less attractive for the geese to want to stay,” Schweigart said.
The geese breed nearby and lose their feathers in the process, which means they can’t fly during the summer. They set up shop in Foster City parks, where they have ample food and no coyotes hunting them.
Within the next month, wildlife officials will start a combination of methods to deter the geese at seven of the most frequented parks.
“Never in isolation were they ever really effective, but in combination with one another, we’re confident that we’ll have some impacts,” Schweigart said.
Over the next year, crews will implement these techniques with the goal of getting them to leave once and for all.
