Muncie man tricks car seller with prop money, court docs reveal

MUNCIE, Ind. — It was supposed to be a simple Facebook Marketplace transaction. The seller hands over the keys to an old car. The buyer, a stack of bills worth $1,500.

It should go without saying that those bills should be real U.S. currency and not include “propmoney.com” printed on the side.

Nathan Durden-Washpun, 38, of Muncie, thought he pulled a fast one, allegedly swapping an envelope of prop cash for a Chrysler 300.

The ruse didn’t last long. Durden was arrested on Sunday by Muncie police officers on preliminary felony charges of conspiracy to commit auto theft, conspiracy to commit fraud and conspiracy to commit forgery.

According to court documents, the seller posted the Chrysler 300 on Facebook Marketplace. Durden allegedly reached out, under a fake name, and expressed interest in the Chrysler.

The seller told police the Chrysler needed some work and Durden came over at least three times to look it over. Eventually, the pair cut a deal and the victim let Durden tow it away.

On Saturday, Durden sent someone to meet the seller and exchange the agreed-upon $1,500 for the car’s title. It was early hours, dark, and the seller couldn’t see the cash to realize he’d been handed an envelope full of worthless paper.

Later, under a light, it became all too apparent when the seller spotted the words “propmoney.com” printed on each bill.

Court documents reveal that the seller tracked down his Chrysler to the area of 8th and Walnut, where he called police. He advised that Durden had attempted to hide the Chrysler by spray painting it another color.

Police took Durden into custody, where he allegedly admitted to being aware that prop money was used to purchase the vehicle. According to court documents, Durden told investigators he conspired with others to purchase the vehicle with fake money to pay off a debt.

Court records show Durden was released from jail after his arrest on Sunday afternoon.

By Monday morning, a warrant was issued for his arrest after he failed to appear in court for an initial hearing in an unrelated case where he’s charged with a misdemeanor for violating a driving condition.

The Delaware County Prosecutor’s Office will make final charging decisions in the prop money incident.
