MERCED COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – After being closed for a few weeks due to a highly contagious virus, the Merced County Animal Services’ shelter is back open and clear of the virus.

On Monday, shelter officials announced the shelter, located at 2150 Shuttle Dr., is clear of their recent Canine Distemper concerns and is back to regular intake days and full operations.

The shelter said they quarantined, sanitized and restored the facility back to a safe environment for all animals, thanks to staff, veterinarians and rescue partners. The facility had closed back in June, when officials discovered the “highly contagious viral disease” that affects dogs, raccoons, skunks and other certain wildlife.

As the shelter reopens to the public, they ask pet owners to:

  • Vaccinate their dogs, especially with the DHPP vaccine (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, and Parainfluenza).
  • Microchip their pets to help reunite them quickly if they are ever lost.

They add that these vital steps will help protect pets, reduce the risk of illness and keep them out of the shelter. For questions, contact them at 209-385-7436 or email animalservices@countyofmerced.com.
