Iberia Parish residents face stray dog threat; leaders silent

IBERIA PARISH, La. (KLFY) — A pack of stray dogs in Iberia Parish has been terrorizing residents, killing pets and threatening safety, according to locals.

Residents have reported multiple incidents where the pack of dogs has attacked and killed their pets, with some describing gruesome scenes of slaughtered animals.

“It was the same pack of dogs doing all of the killings. They have personally killed two of our animals,” said Shandy Harrison, a local resident.

Keith Henry, another resident, described coming home to find his rabbits skinned in their cages.

“They had actually skinned the rabbits, pulled all the fur off of the rabbits completely through the wire mesh,” said Henry.

Tomecka Delahoussaye recounted a personal attack by a different pack of dogs on Hopkins Street.

“They let out one bark, and they was coming at me,” she said. “It was all over me. I even broke my ribs.”

Francine Guillot, who created a Facebook group to track dog sightings, noted, “43 cats, seven rabbits that were in cages were mauled. At the beginning, they were just killing the cats and just leaving them. Now they are more aggressive, I noticed that.”

Some residents have had to fortify their yards to protect their pets, while others have been left with the aftermath of attacks. One woman’s car was damaged by the dogs, with scratches, dents and torn-off parts.

Residents have expressed frustration with the lack of action from community leaders, who reportedly told them that animal attacks weren’t their responsibility and that they “only deal with criminal cases.”

Keith Henry warned of the potential danger to humans.

“They’re not going to stop until somebody either captures, kills them or somebody else gets killed, you know, a child or an adult, because these dogs will take down an adult. I guarantee it,” said Henry.

The pack of dogs first appeared in Loreauville over a year ago, and the attacks have since spread.

Residents feel that Iberia Parish leaders and animal control have been unresponsive. The community remains on edge as they await action to address the threat.
