(QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Superintendent, Dr. Crystal Hill, is excited about the 2025-26 school year and the opportunities ahead as district leaders implement new safety protocols and encourage parents to sign up for the Infinite Campus portal.

During a Back to School event on Tuesday at the Central Piedmont Community College campus, district leaders talked about some new protocols for students, including safety procedures where the district will be using the “I Love U Guys‘ safety procedures when it comes to school lockdowns and student communication inside of the schools.

As part of our continuous effort to improve and standardize our safety procedures, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools has adopted the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) for all schools, effective for the 2025-2026 school year.

This protocol, developed by the national non-profit “I Love U Guys” Foundation, is used by school districts across the country to create a predictable and unified response to any school-based incident.

The SRP is an all-hazards approach that uses simple, clear, common language for all students, staff, and first responders. Instead of having dozens of different codes for specific scenarios, the SRP is based on five simple actions. When an incident occurs, a specific action will be announced, followed by instructions.

The five actions are: hold, secure, lockdown, evacuate, and shelter.

Crime across the district is also down, according to statistics from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Guns found on the campuses of CMS schools dropped 69% and went from 29 guns found on campus to nine for the 2023-’24 school year.

There was also a call to parents who have yet to sign up for the Infinite Campus portal to complete this task as soon as possible. Infinite Campus is a student information system that all districts in North Carolina are using. Last year, the district used PowerSchool. So far, 40,382 parents or guardians have completed the registration process to the Infinite Campus app, but that is still a long way to go with enrollment at over 141,000 in the district.

“These forms, in all seriousness, provide really critical information for each child’s teachers and administrators,” said Beth Thompson, chief strategy and innovation officer with CMS. “Things like medical information, preferences regarding photo and media releases.”

CMS notes there are still 80 open teaching positions heading into the school year, and the human resources department is actively interviewing potential candidates.

As for school transportation, the district has all routes covered at this time.

Dr. Hill said her one concern is funding for the district in the future. She said that with so much uncertainty on every level, district leaders have already started the budget process, something that is not usually started until November. The new school year begins on August 25, 2025.
