Around 7:27 a.m., the Westwego Volunteer Fire Department was called to the scene of a 1-alarm fire in the 300 block of Avenue A.
Within two minutes, firefighters were on scene and found flames coming from several windows of the 1-story house. Bystanders reportedly told firefighters that the residents and their dog may have been inside.
The fire was extinguished within 20 minutes, according to fire department officials. During a search of the home, firefighters reported finding a large dog inside deceased.
The residents were later found safe in the neighborhood.
No further injuries were reported from the fire. American Red Cross officials are assisting the two displaced residents.
The fire remains under investigation.
