CHICAGO (WGN) — A 9-year-old boy has died after he fell down a flight of stairs and fractured his skull during a violent altercation at a CTA Green Line station.

The medical examiner confirmed Elijah Flores died from blunt force injuries to the head. His death is considered a homicide.

According to Chicago police, the incident occurred on Sunday, Aug. 10, when a 22-year-old male was involved in a verbal altercation with two people that became physical. The department said one of the offenders struck the victim in the back of the head with an unknown object, causing him to fall down the stairs.

The second victim, the 9-year-old boy, also fell and struck his head on the ground, resulting in head trauma.

The offenders fled the scene. No one is in custody.
