Winnfield officer charged with theft of charity donations

COLFAX, La. (WNTZ)- A Winnfield Police Department detective was arrested after an investigation revealed he allegedly used charitable donations for personal expenses, according to the Grant Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said Jessie Ray Phillips, 58, of Winnfield, organized a nonprofit group called Save a Kid–Shop with a Cop, a 501(c)(3) established to assist children in need. The organization raised money through donations with the understanding the funds would benefit underprivileged youth.

An investigation found that Phillips was withdrawing donated funds for his own use, the sheriff’s office said.

Phillips was arrested on charges of theft over $1,000 and illegal transmission of monetary funds.

The case remains under investigation.
