Deputies arrested Robert Simms, 36, of Waldorf on Aug. 5 in connection with the shooting after executing a search warrant at his home, where they found a handgun with an obliterated serial number, according to the sheriff’s office.
It all started on July 10, when the victim was stopped at a red light at the intersection of Billingsley and Middletown roads. As the driver was sitting at the light, Simms rode past him on a motorcycle and fired several rounds from a gun, according to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office.
The gunfire shattered the window of the victim’s car, leaving them with minor injuries. Upon responding to the scene, officers learned that the two were engaged in a road rage dispute just minutes before the shooting.
During the investigation, detectives identified Simms as the suspect, discovering that he was barred from possessing a firearm due to a previous conviction, the sheriff’s office noted. Authorities charged him with aggravated assault, weapon violations and other offenses.
On Aug. 14, a judge ordered Simms be held without bond at the Charles County Detention Center.
The investigation is ongoing.
