Officials work to complete new Flemingsburg Elementary School

FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. (FOX 56) – As school districts across the state head back to school, some districts are working on growing for the future.

In Fleming County, this time next year, students will be heading to class and starting their educational journey at the brand new Flemingsburg Elementary School.

Superintendent Brian Creasman says this has been a project 20 years in the making.

He said the current Flemingsburg Elementary has its best days behind it, so it’s time for an upgrade.

This project is in conjunction with the Fleming Center, a K-12 innovation space.

Creasman said the key to this new building is that it’ll provide new educational opportunities for students in this modern age.

“So, obviously, you want as much real-world experiences and opportunities as possible, even starting as early as kindergarten,” Creasman explained. “You also want that personalized learning and that collaborate. That interdisciplinary, and how the school is set up back here. The students, the classrooms are really close together. We can see a lot of intermingling, a little, a lot of collaboration.”

Along the way, this project has experienced its fair share of hiccups, having missed a number of days of construction this past winter.

Regardless, Creasman said teachers will move into the building in July of 2026, and students will start the 2026-2027 school year in the new school.

Having had the chance to walk through the construction site, there is still a long way to go before crossing the finish line. The district is being very meticulous about every detail going into this new school.

From incorporating as much natural light as possible to classrooms that offer up a number of collaborative opportunities, this new school’s main mission will be to create a foundation for the next generation of students.

Creasman said the district wants students and the community to be proud of the work being done to provide the best education possible.

He also wants the community to know the work being done is well thought out.

“We want the community, to realize just how frugal we are with taxpayer dollars,” Creasman detailed. “We got a beautiful building back here. It’s going to be awesome. But it’s not. We’ve not really went, crazy with the design. We just wanted to keep it simple, but we wanted to provide those learning experiences for kids.”

Creasman said this school being top-of-the-line is also crucial because it can be a resource to either keep people in Fleming County or bring new people to the county and raise their families here.
