Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones said more than 40% of Phase 1 has been completed. The new facility is located off of McDowell Road. Crews are preparing to enter Phase 2 of the project.
“Phase 2 will incorporate the majority of the building for the new facility. The majority of the, in other words, for the new facility. So, it’s going to be the most costly part. And we’re trying to, we’re working with our financial advisor. We’re also working with our architects and working with other contractors to try to make sure that we get the best price,” said Hinds County Supervisor Robert Graham, District 1.
Jones said there are more than 900 people being housed at the Hinds County Detention Center in Raymond.
“We need more space. We need a better and bigger facility to be able to accommodate the needs of our detainees, along with meeting the constitutional needs of the detainees currently in our custody,” the sheriff said.
According to Graham, prices have more than tripled due to the tariffs and inflation, so the new facility will cost more than initially planned.
