Kelly Brown, 40, of Havertown, appeared at the Penobscot Judicial Center in Bangor, Maine, on Monday and had bail set, Maine State Police (MSP) said.
A three-year-old was found dead inside a vehicle at a local business Aug. 9 by the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office, according to MSP. Brown was found nearby and detained; police did not specify where she was found. The vehicle the child was found in was registered to Brown.
Detectives and members of the Maine State Police Evidence Response Team were called to investigate, leading to a manslaughter charge being filed against Brown.
An autopsy on the child was performed the next day. MSP says the Deputy Chief Medical Examiner reported that the child did have symptoms of hyperthermia; however, additional testing is needed to find the cause and manner of death.
Law enforcement had already conducted a welfare check on Brown and the child before the 3-year-old died, MSP said.
MSP also said the incident was isolated and there is no threat to the public.
