Action Comedy, Road Thriller
Hutch Mansell thought the assassin grind was behind him, but it followed him on vacation. In Nobody 2, Hutch takes his family to a retro waterpark hoping to reconnect. Instead, he’s drawn into a collision with crooked sheriffs, crime bosses, and lots of bloody knuckles. I loved how this feels like if John Wick and the Vacation series had a baby. The action hits just like the first one, but we get a little more humor and inclusion of the family that we didn’t see in the first one. Bob Odenkirk proves again he is a leading man and can carry himself well in fighting scenes. If you’re looking for action and fun to close out your Summer, you’ll be in for a treat.
Spike Lee
Alan Fox
Denzel Washington, A$AP Rocky, Ilfenesh Hadera, Jeffrey Wright
Neo-noir Crime Thriller
Highest 2 Lowest is inspired by the classic Kurosawa film High and Low. Denzel Washington plays David King, a music mogul whose life is flipped when a kidnapping plot risks him potentially losing both a son and an empire. Spike Lee returns with Washington with a fun, uniquely shot, and intriguing crime mystery that infuses heart, music, and that signature Spike Lee style that will have you wanting more.
Noah Hawley
Sydney Chandler, Alex Lawther
Sci-Fi Horror
In Alien: Earth, Noah Hawley’s prequel series, takes place a couple of years before the original Alien, and centers around synthetic-human hybrids fighting to save the planet after a downed Weyland-Yutani ship unleashes deadly creatures. While I can’t review the entire series yet, I can say that the first two episodes do not work for me the way it has seemingly been working for other critics. The pacing is rough, the editing choppy, and the story both dark and dull. That’s not to say it can’t turn the ship around, but it’s not worth seeing in my opinion until the season concludes.
Genndy Tartakovsky
Adam Devine, Idris Elba, Kathryn Hahn
Animation, Comedy
Genndy Tartakovsky (Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack) is bringing us an adult raunchy animated comedy about Bull (Adam Devine), whose life is changed forever when he discovers that his owners plan to have him fixed. Wanting to savor the last time he has with his… toys…, he runs away from home for one last ride with the help of his fellow canine friends. This is a rough one to recommend unless you know your audience’s preferences and tastes, particularly in comedy. I think some jokes land, but there are a lot that are too crass for an average audience to break through. This is akin to South Park, but all centered around the grossest habits our pets have in life. There’s a stacked cast of great voice actors, but beware of watching this near family or friends who don’t like dirty humor, and you may have a fun time. We spoke with the director and stars of Fixed in the video above. Check it out!

Crime Thriller
One desperate night, one impossible goal: Lynette has to come up with $25,000, or lose everything. Night Always Comes follows Vanessa Kirby as a working mom hustling across Portland’s shadowy streets to save her family home. As she faces an eviction, her night devolves more and more into chaos that she may never be able to get out of. I think this worked well as far as it’s a compelling premise, and the first half of the movie moves along at a good pace, and kept me engaged. The issue came from the story not really shifting into that next gear in time, but overall, I think this will be a popular film over the weekend, and if you have the time worth checking out.
