Man charged in Big Lake standoff
A Big Lake man is criminally charged and behind bars at the Sherburne County Jail after threatening officers during a standoff in Big Lake that started Thursday night and ended with him being arrested hours later.
Peter Owen Currie, 57, is charged with one count of threats of violence and two counts of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon.
Big Lake police said they responded a little after 7 p.m. to a report of a person banging on doors and walls and screaming inside an apartment at an apartment complex on Northstar Street.
The criminal complaint says that when police arrived, they heard the person, later identified as Currie, yelling and throwing items in the apartment.
Officers knocked on his door, and Currie continued to yell and told them to “leave him alone and not open or touch his door.”
Currie opened his doors with knives in each hand, started scraping the blades together, and told officers he would cut them.
The complaint says that an officer told him multiple times to drop the knives, but he didn’t. Currie then briefly shut his door, threw the contents of a water bottle at the two officers when he reopened it, and told them, “I have a gun, too,” and he was “going to kill someone,” before going back into his apartment.
Other law enforcement agencies came to assist, and residents on several floors were evacuated. Eventually, Currie was taken into custody at 1:40 a.m.
He told an officer after his arrest that he had been drinking and was stressed over his health, the court document says.
Currie made his first court appearance on Friday, and his next court date is scheduled for September.
