Alpha School was started in Austin, Texas, back in 2014 by co-founder MacKenzie Price.
“I was a mom who was frustrated with the lack of ability for my daughters to get a personalized learning experience in their traditional schools,” Price said. “What I realized is that it is so challenging, in fact, impossible for a teacher who’s managing 20 plus students who are all at wildly different levels of knowledge.”
Instead, students learn math, reading, language and science self-paced. Price said the AI lets the students, parents and teachers know exactly where a child is on his or her learning journey.
“You can take that third-grade student who maybe needs to be at first grade in reading level, but could be sixth grade math, and that student can be going at the pace that they need through that,” Price said.
The Alpha school will be held in extra classroom spaces at Guidepost Montessori in the University area. Price said this year there will only be room for about 25 students, but the plan is to eventually get more space.
“I think we’re going to be very, very great neighbors and partners in delivering education on this,” Price said.
After spending two hours on AI-assisted lessons, the rest of the school day is spent doing hands-on activities to help kids learn life skills like teamwork and develop their talents.
“We are now in such an exciting time to develop those life skills that we know are going to help kids be successful in this new world,” Price said.
The school is set to open in October for students in grades K-3.
