Delcambre Shrimp Festival tackles challenges of shrimp industry

DELCAMBRE, La. (KLFY)-In Delcambre, shrimping is more than just a business, it’s a way of life for the community.

The Delcambre Shrimp Festival, an event that highlights the shrimping industry, provides a platform for local shrimpers to showcase their work and traditions.

Local shrimpers, Shane Leblanc and Marcus Leblanc, shared what it means to carry on this vital tradition.

“It’s a life we love to do it, we were born and raised here,” said Shane Leblanc.

The Leblanc brothers have inherited a tradition passed down through generations. But with that life comes challenges, as rising costs and foreign imports have made it harder for local shrimpers to survive.

“It cost about $900 to go out a week to go out, so before you leave you need to get out there you already $900 in the hole, and then fighting the process and mostly imports,” said Marcus Leblanc.

Despite the economic pressures, the LeBlanc’s continue shrimping not only for their livelihood but also for their community.

“It helps families from Louisiana with their industry because it’s not good for those people, not only Louisiana all states, but we also all fighting this, I’d like to see more people come down south and buy fresh shrimp,” said Shane Leblanc.

With the Delcambre Shrimp Festival ongoing, the LeBlanc’s and other local shrimpers hope to draw attention to the importance of supporting local industries and preserving their way of life.

“It’s family that’s what we look at its family, the whole town of Delcambre to us is family, so we here, no matter rain, snow, sleet, or shine, we here, so y’all come down, we shrimping, let’s go,” said Shane Leblanc.
