Cottonwood Heights woman allegedly faked identities, forged prescriptions to get Adderall

COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS, Utah (ABC4) — A Cottonwood Heights woman has been charged after posing as at least two different people to get false prescriptions for Adderall, documents say.

Katie Marie Romney, 38, has been charged with nine counts of forgery, a third-degree felony, and nine counts of obtaining a prescription under false pretenses, a Class A misdemeanor.

According to court documents, on May 29, 2025, the Cottonwood Heights Police Department received a report from a pharmacist at Smith’s Pharmacy. She reported that the pharmacy was receiving fraudulent prescriptions, and told the police about two women she believed had fake prescriptions.

The first individual, going by the name Erica Granato, had a Salt Lake County address and filled prescriptions five times, receiving 260 pills over five months. The second individual went by the name Katherine Miller and had the same address as the first. She filled her prescription four times, receiving 120 pills over four months.

The pharmacist reported that both women’s prescriptions were always picked up by Romney. After her concerns that these prescriptions were fake, the pharmacist contacted the provider that created them, who was a telehealth provider from North Carolina.

The telehealth provider spoke with the pharmacist and said that she did not authorize the prescriptions, and they were fraudulent. Following the police report, police spoke with this provider, who stated that she had three patients she suspected of being fake to forge prescriptions.

According to the telehealth provider, Katherine Miller and Erica Granato were her patients, but she believed they were fake and had not written them an Adderall prescription in over a year. She stated that they continued to submit new prescription forms despite her not filling them out.

The Cottonwood Heights Police officer reviewed surveillance footage and saw Romney picking up prescriptions at the Smith’s Pharmacy on multiple occasions. In reviewing the prescription documents, he believed that they were being forged, as they all contained the same information.

Romney was charged with creating and filling the nine forged prescriptions, resulting in 18 criminal charges. No court hearings have been scheduled yet.
